Clap Clap Clap

Found this court-side video of Damian Lillard’s series winning three-pointer vs the Houston Rockets. I love how he knows he is open, and demands the ball with those three claps right before the ball is inbounded. Lillard is quickly becoming one of my favorite NBA players. Not only for his on court performance, but he is an Oakland kid who seems smart, fearless and most of all, humble. The Trailblazers have fallen behind to the San Antonio Spurs in their second round series but don’t worry, I have a feeling Dame will be a playoff mainstay in the years to come.

Confidence Baby Confidence

In an All-star game that featured NBA greats like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Tom Chambers, James Worthy, Hakeem Olajuwon, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Julius Erving, Dominique Wilkins, Kevin McHale, Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley, Bill Laimbeer and Maurice Cheeks, no one would have ever thought that the game would fall into Rolando Blackman’s steady hands.

Keep in mind that Rolando Blackman was a great player who did make the All-star team (his jersey was also retired by the Mavericks). However, in a game with mega-star names like MJ, Dr. J and Magic, Rolando Blackman seems an after thought.

No matter how you look at it, the ball ends up in Blackman’s hands with 3 seconds lefts trailing the East All-stars by two points. He drives the ball to the basket and is fouled with no time on the clock by any of the four Eastern players who attempt to stop him (those defenders being MJ, Dr. J, Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas).

In this situation, because there is no time on the clock, the foul shooter stands alone to shoot the final free throws. Being down by two, Blackman must make both free throws in-order to tie the game and go to overtime. This is the definition of a pressure situation, the entire game rides on one person, not the mega-star MJ or Bird, but that person is Rolando Blackman.

He walks to the line, performs his free throw routine and makes the first free throw. Teammates cheer while opponents assure him that he will miss the second one. He’s passed the ball, dribbles eight times, bends his knees and releases the shot. As the ball leaves his finger tips, there is no doubt in his mind that the shot is good. Right after releasing the ball, Blackman begins to say “Confidence baby” and after the ball swishes through the cylinder, he yells, “CONFIDENCE!” (1:32 into the video there is a replay). The Western All-stars ended up winning in overtime 154-149 thanks to their unlikely hero.

What can we learn from Rolando Blackman? It doesn’t matter who you are, if you have confidence, you will succeed. Others can see and feel confidence. If you believe in yourself, so will others.

Be confident that you will make your free throw. Be confident you will nail your presentation. Be confident that you will make that sale. Be confident you’ll get her number.

It’s all about confidence baby, CONFIDENCE!

Dirk Doc

A must watch for any Dirk Nowitzki fan. Shows just how dedicated he is to being great. One of the reasons he is my favorite player of all time. Watch, learn and listen if you want to become a great at what you do.

Men Among Boys

Ever wonder what NBA players would have looked like playing in high school? Well, here is the footage brought to you by none other than…. Paul Pierce? It’s almost funny to watch these freak athletes playing against 17 year olds. It’s easy to forget how enormous these athletes are when watching them on TV standing next to their peers. This video shows a few of the NBA players who care straight from high school, i.e. Amare, KG, Kobe, Chandler. It also covers guys like Z-Bo, Iverson and Paul Pierce himself.

Reignman: Most Swag in NBA History

Shawn Kemp is rarely talked about in the discussion for greatest dunker. Vince Carter, Michael Jordan, Dr. J and Dominique Wilkins always come before the Kemp. All I know is that the Reignman’s top 10 can go toe-to-toe with any dunkers top 10.

Phil Jackson: The Knicks New “Big Apple”

On March 18, 2014, the New York Knicks took the first step to becoming a relevant NBA title contender by signing Hall of Fame Coach Phil Jackson as Knicks team President. The Knicks have not won a NBA championship since 1973 and are hoping that Phil’s championship pedigree will rub off on the struggling franchise. Knicks owner, James Dolan, who has a history of interfering with different aspects of the Knicks basketball operations, has promised to “willingly and gratefully” cede power to the Zen Master. During his introductory press conference, Phil discussed the “culture” that he plans on bringing to the organization, as well as his future plans with Knicks superstar, Carmelo Anthony.

“I have no problem committing to saying Carmelo is in the future plans. There are a number of things I see Carmelo doing as he moves forward, and I think I’m on record from a year ago saying that Carmelo, as great a player as he is, still has another level he can go to. I hope together with the team we create we can get there.” - Phil Jackson (March 18, 2014).

This signing comes to the dismay of Laker fans who have long hoped for a Jackson return to the franchise whether it be as coach or in the front office. Phil is married to Jeanie Buss, Co-Owner of the Lakers and head of Business Operations for the team. The Los Angeles Lakers are going to need to fix their problems in the front office before they can successfully move forward.

Like a Boss

The 2013 Spelling Bee winner, Arvind Mahankali, must have known he would win this year. At 13 years old, he already possesses swag comparable to only the greatest champions of all time. Even the great Michael Jordan showed some emotion after winning each of his 6 championships. Not Arvind Mahankali, the kid with ice in his veins, spelled the German derived Yiddish word, “knaidel” to seal his place in history as the 2013 Scripps Spelling Bee champion. Skip ahead to the end and check out how this kid reacts to becoming the Champ.
